I have always loved tattoos, and just over 10 years ago, I took the decision to become a tattoo artist. My first step was to go to all of my local tattoo shops, armed with a portfolio of work, to ask if they had any apprenticeships available. Not one of the many studios I visited would even give me the time of day, never-mind take a minute just to look at the work I could do.

It felt like the industry had a huge barbed wire fence around it, and there was only one locked gate. The only people with the keys were current artists, and it felt like the didn't want to open the door for anybody, especially not me!

"I was angry and disheartened, I thought; what's the point? I very nearly gave up, but I wanted it so much. I knew there must be a way in!"

A FAR FROM PERFECT SOLUTION

Then I discovered the world of YouTube, where many tattoo artists were offering tips and advice. I spent the next few years watching thousands of hours of content across every single channel on the topic I could find. This is how I learned to tattoo.

"It was a hard slog and I made a lot of mistakes, but eventually I got to a point where I was good enough and confident enough to tattoo professionally"

I found that the problem with jumping around on YouTube is that there's no structure. None! Jumping from a linework lesson, straight into a shading lesson, and back to learning about lines, then onto needle depth! I spent a lot of time confused and learnt things late that would have been really useful to know early on in my journey.

"But I persevered and finally the information sank in, with hindsight I could see the problem."

We learn best when lessons are well ordered (ask any school teacher, they've been doing it a while!), when knowledge grows one step after another, when you get the basics right and create a solid foundation to build upon. This is what's missing when you're hopping around on platforms like YouTube.

FAST FORWARD 10 YEARS

Fast forward 10 years, and I find myself inside the barbed wire fence! I've had a few apprentices in the studio over the years, however, I can now see the industry from the perspective of the people I once thought were arseholes when I first started out! It's led me to find more problems with the entire apprenticeship system.

"People who are good at what they do, are usually too busy doing what they're good at!"

In my studio, eager students would show up, desperate to learn. I wanted to help, but I just didn't have the time to dedicate to them, to show them everything I'd learnt over the years. Nor did I have a system in place that could actually teach them the skills in a way that made sense.

It can be great to sit and watch someone tattoo because it's interesting. However if you want to learn, this can be wasted time. You can watch thousands of videos about swimming, but you'll never learn to swim until you jump into the water.

"This is a massive problem across the entire industry, and it gave me an idea."

I went back to YouTube and searched through a ton of online tattoo courses, and discovered that nothing had really changed in almost 10 years. All the YouTube channels and online courses didn't have a structure, and to be honest, many of them were driven by ego rather than a genuine desire to teach. I wanted to do something about it...

WHAT'S NEXT

Now we cover the process to take everything you have learnt and convert it into doing real tattoos on real people. This is the final stage and is where you take responsibility by following the laid-out blueprint. Reputation is one of the most important things a tattooist can have and following my advice will guarantee yours will go unharmed. Also, you watch over my shoulder I demonstrate the tattoo process from start to finish again and again.

Just a quick note about what this course is not: This is not a drawing course, although your drawing skills will naturally improve throughout the course. Secondly, this is not a hygiene course - I will be demonstrating how to correctly set up your work areas in a safe manner, but the laws on hygiene vary from country to country. So I do not want to include any information that doesn't apply worldwide. All the information on setting things up the right way are industry standard and will apply to everyone, no matter where you're located.
